Join our living laboratory

VO Health's Human Performance Program is a service for motivated people with specific competition goals. We deliver precision physiological data that you and your coach can leverage to guide training throughout your next build-up to a marathon, 5k, Hyrox, Ironman, or similar event. Simultaneously, your data will help us build out our cutting-edge molecular fitness technology.

If you don't have a coach, our coaches and performance scientists would love to work with you.

Each testing visit combines a graded VO₂ Max treadmill protocol, optional lactate threshold testing, and a resting blood draw. Data is processed individually and returned in a structured report within the same week. As you repeat testing across months, the longitudinal pattern reveals how your physiology actually responds to training, nutrition, and recovery.

This is not a one-and-done test on purpose. The real value of these insights is seeing how they're modified. It is a research-grade measurement program designed for athletes with specific goals who want to train with real numbers.

What sets us apart

  • VO₂ Max testing on a gold-standard metabolic cart (COSMED K5 or PARVO Medics)

  • Individual data reports with stage-by-stage metabolic breakdown

  • Personalized training plan built from your actual physiology, strengths, and weaknesses

  • Longitudinal design, every follow-up test is comparable to your baseline, enabling identification of performance trends

  • An inside look at our molecular fitness technology

What you receive at each visit

Every visit generates rich, longitudinal data returned in a structured report within the same week.

Maximal oxygen consumption (VO₂ MAX)

Tests are performed on a treadmill, rower, or bike with a PARVO Medics TrueOne or COSMED K5 metabolic cart. Data is collected breath-by-breath and exported at the single-breath level for individual analysis.

You receive the full dataset, not just a peak number. You can see exactly what happened to your oxygen uptake, CO₂ production, ventilation, and heart rate at every workload, and compare those curves across all your visits.

Cutting-edge Multi-omics technology

A trained phlebotomist collects a resting sample before exercise. Processed through a next-gen laboratory measuring approximately 1,000 proteins in your blood. This produces a molecular signature of your fitness, which pathways are up or down and where interventions may yield the most benefit.

Lactate threshold
Optional add-on

Extended submaximal protocol of 5–8 stages. Capillary blood at each stage identifies your first and second lactate thresholds and enables fat/carbohydrate oxidation rate estimation to dial in nutrition. Can be added at enrollment or any visit.

Your data report

Each visit generates a structured report delivered within the same week:

  • Full stage-by-stage metabolic data from the VO₂ Max test

  • Ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) with corresponding workload and heart rate

  • Blood panel results with flagged values and comparison to prior visits

  • Running economy and/or gross efficiency (depending on test modality)

  • Performance modeling based on race data (critical power/speed)

  • Summary interpretation and individualized training zone recommendations

Training Plan & Coaching

Your first visit includes a personalized training plan built from your test data (metabolic thresholds, VO₂ Max), competition-specific goals, and training history. Builder and Elite tiers include plan updates at each follow-up visit, so your training evolves as your physiology does.

All tiers include periodic coaching check-in sessions (60 minutes each) to review results, adjust training targets, and answer questions. Check-ins can be conducted in person or remotely.

IRB-Approved Research Participation

VO Health is building a longitudinal dataset to study how physiological markers change over time in recreational and competitive athletes. We have over 200 people so far, from ages 19 to 80 and from sedentary to Olympic medalists. We'd love for you to be a part of it. Cohort participants receive discounted VO Research pricing in exchange for contributing de-identified data to our aggregate analyses.

Research participation requires:

  • Completion of a data use agreement and informed consent form (de-identified data only, your individual results remain private)

  • Adherence to the agreed-upon testing schedule

  • Training logs submitted between visits

Logistics & Next Steps

Visit duration and scheduling

Testing visits typically run 60–90 minutes (blood draw + warm-up + graded exercise test + recovery). Visits with lactate testing run approximately 90–120 minutes. Follow-up visits are most informative when spaced at least 8 to 12 weeks apart.
